What Will God Do for You?

I was looking at Romans 8 today and considered what God was saying in verse 28, “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.” The first question that comes to mind is what does ‘good’ mean. Sometimes we are tempted to think that because we believe in God and go to church that we should get something out of that relationship. If a believer is sick, they might be tempted to bargain with God, foolishly thinking that they have something to bargain with. If a believer has lost a job, they might be tempted to think that God should provide them with with a good replacement. After all, doesn’t it say that God works for the good of His people. The temptation is to define ‘good’ as the world sees... financial, material, health, etc. Let me throw an example from parenthood. If your child had a lot of junk food available, they might be tempted to stuff themselves. Maybe they gathered a lot of candy from a party or celebration and want to sit down and eat it all in one setting. If you ask that child if eating all that would be good, many would say yes without a second thought. As a parent, we might see it a little... maybe a lot... differently. We could look at the sugar high, cavities, loss of appetite, health, and try to find a different outcome. Maybe they could have a little each day or some other arrangement. The point is, most parents would see that the good is not in consuming it all. To set limits and guidelines would be much more valuable. Now look at the Bible verse again. God is not necessarily saying that the good is material blessing, etc. He is speaking of what is best for us. God can shape and direct us in the opportunities He gives or in the trials that we face. If God has called us, we must also know that He will equip us. It doesn’t say God works for the good of all people. It says He works for the good of those who love Him. It is indicating a relationship... a commitment... a level of trust. He takes care of His own... sometimes with blessings beyond what we can imagine and sometimes in trials that mold and shape us. The ultimate ‘good’ is found when our Heavenly Father calls us home to Him in eternity. Father, like a child, help me to trust and rely on You no matter what my circumstances. Help me see Your hand leading me. Amen
