Open the Eyes of My Heart, Lord

It has been almost a month since I have written a pondering. A month ago, I had mentioned having double vision and rejoicing that there was a way to correct my vision. That solution lasted a couple of days. I have struggled to read, and especially to look at a computer screen for that whole time. I am not back to normal again (if I ever was normal), but at this point, my vision is good enough again to begin writing. I hope that it is a blessing to you. I know it has been good for me to ponder daily events and to consider how God’s word leads us each day. I know firsthand that if the eyes are not working well, our whole life is affected. For driving, I had to do it with one eye closed, as two eyes meant double vision. I lost much of my depth perception that way and it was mentally exhausting. Backing up became especially challenging. I am not saying this to stir up sympathy, although I will not turn away any prayers for healing. I am saying it because spiritual sight has the same consequence on our lives. I think some struggle with double vision... one eye on Christ and the other eye on the world. God tells us that we cannot serve two masters. We cannot be fully committed to God and hunger for the ways of the world. There is no way that we can focus on both. It will cause us to stumble before the Lord and become divided on what or who we worship. We need God’s wisdom so that as we read God’s word, He helps us see what we need to see. When we look at the world around us, and especially the lost souls of those looking for true meaning, we need spiritual eyes to see them as God sees them. When we gather for worship, or prayer, we need God to open the eyes of our hearts. What are these spiritual eyes and how do they get opened? God... and prayer. The Bible tells us to ask God for wisdom, for He desires to generously give it to His people. The Apostle Paul talks about keeping our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith. Also, He tells us not to take our eyes off of the goal, which is the salvation of our souls. If our spiritual eyes are not working, the whole body is affected. Physical blindness sometimes leads to increased spiritual vision. Father, You tell us that faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. Help us depend on You. Amen
